The Nigerian Communications Satellite (NIGCOMSAT) Limited has described claims that the company is incapacitated in the rescue of the Chibok girls as untrue, saying it deals purely with communication technology and not surveillance.
A statement by the head of corporate communications of the company, Mr Sonny Aragbe-Akpore, said that insinuation by the deputy chairman, Science and Technology Committee at the national conference, Mr Ezekiel Izuogu, that NIGCOMSAT is incapacitated in the rescue of the abducted girls because of financial constraints and lack of infrastructure is a misrepresentation of the activities of the company.
Izuogu was quoted in a newspaper report on Thursday, May 15, 2014, as saying the company was technically incapacitated to carry out its responsibilities because of paucity of funds and technical manpower.
The report credited to Izuogu reads in part, “It was impossible for NIGCOMSAT to rescue the abducted girls due to its lack of facilities because it is technically incapacitated to carry out its responsibilities contrary to the expectations of Nigerians.”
It said the statement credited to the respected Mr Izuogu was a misrepresentation of the actual company or agency being referred to.
The statement stressed that NIGCOMSAT is purely a satellite company with the core mandate to provide transponder leasing services to telecommunications, broadband, broadcast and related companies, adding that the company also provides, deploys and implements turnkey solutions including internet infrastructure, Voice-over Internet Protocol (VOIP), satellite communications, wireless communications, among others.
“Indeed, it is not an earth observation and remote sensing company; so, the information that it was incapacitated in the search and rescue mission for the Chibok girls is completely misplaced,” it added.
